Rose Square
Rose Square, formerly known as Market Square, sits at the front of St. John’s Church and has been a vibrant trading hub since the mid-13th century. Once home to a pillory and a well in its southwest corner, the square was relocated in the 1920s due to spatial limitations, and by 1927, the old market was transformed into a park-like square.
Today, in the heart of Cēsis Old Town, the historic square is a popular gathering place for both locals and visitors. It features Matīss Jansons’ sculpture Ancient Cēsis, and on weekends, various events bring it to life.
In summer, the fountain becomes a family favourite as children play among its jets by day, while at night it dazzles in colourful lights, entertaining café-goers around the square. Rose Square also hosts Cēsis’ annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on the First Advent.
