Melānija Vanaga Museum

Born in 1905 in Kalna Sermuļi, Drabeši Parish, Melānija Vanaga was a Latvian writer, historian, and exile survivor. After beginning law studies at university, she was deported to Siberia for 16 years due to her involvement in the student organisation Dziesmuvara and other “offences” under the Soviet regime. She returned to Latvia in 1957.

The Melānija Vanaga Museum, located near her birthplace, offers a deeply personal and historical insight into her life, exile, and legacy.

Visitors can:

  • Watch a documentary about her life
  • Explore never-published handwritten manuscripts
  • See her personal belongings and hear the stories behind them

Near the sacred stone close to the museum, you’ll find Latvia’s only Siberian dugout replica – offering a stark, realistic impression of life in exile under harsh conditions.

A Legacy in Lineage:

One of the museum’s most remarkable features is a 10-metre-long genealogical scroll compiled by Vanaga herself, tracing her family across 14 generations back to 1600.

The museum is open year-round, especially inviting during the quieter seasons when reflection comes naturally. Even on cold or grey days, the museum remains warm, calm, and filled with light – perfect for slow, thoughtful visits.

Visits must be arranged in advance, as the museum does not operate with fixed opening hours.
