Sculpture "Ancient Cēsis"
Unveiled in 2016 to mark the 810th anniversary of Cēsis, “Ancient Cēsis” is a bronze sculpture by Matīass Jansons that illustrates the city’s medieval plan. Based on early historical maps, the piece includes long-lost landmarks, including the old mint—whose true location remains uncertain and is symbolised in the sculpture by a historic coin.
According to the sculptor’s own legend, when a knight appears on the coin’s surface, worn by the touch of visitors, the city of Cēsis will forge its own currency once again.
