Cēsis Student Battalion Memorial
The restored memorial of the Cēsis Regiment Student Battalion marks the path taken on 6 June 1919 by young volunteers heading to the front lines during Latvia’s pivotal fight for freedom.
The Battles of Cēsis in the summer of 1919 saw combined Latvian and Estonian forces triumph over the German Landeswehr and Iron Division—defenders of newly emerging national states. This victory secured Latvia’s independence and is commemorated in Estonia as Victory Day in the Landeswehr War. Northern Latvian youth, notably the Student Battalion of the Cēsis Regiment, played an active role in these defining events.
Originally unveiled on 26 May 1938, the memorial was dismantled 12 years later by Soviet authorities. In Latvia’s Awakening era, sculptor Maija Baltiņa re-created the monument, and it was proudly unveiled on 11 November 1992.
