Green Railways
The Green Railways (Zaļie Dzelceļi) is a scenic network of hiking, cycling, horse riding, and skiing routes built along former railway lines in Vidzeme (Latvia) and Southern Estonia. Covering around 750 km, the trail combines historical infrastructure with breathtaking landscapes and cultural heritage sites.
The route integrates:
- Former railway paths
- Local cycling trails like Tour de LatEst
- The charming Alūksne–Gulbene narrow-gauge train route (“Bānītis”)
Accessible year-round, it welcomes hikers, cyclists, horse riders, and cross-country skiers in winter.
Best Time to Visit: May to September for hiking and cycling.
