Āraiši Windmill
The windmill was built as part of the Drabeši Manor estate around the middle of the 19th century. During its reconstruction, a stone inscribed with “ANNO 1852” was discovered in the wall of the building—possibly marking the year the windmill was constructed.
The Āraiši windmill is a so-called Dutch-type windmill, the kind which first appeared in the territory of present-day Latvia as early as the 14th century, near castles and manors. These windmills have a rotating “head”, also referred to as the “cap”. Using a special mechanism, the head could be turned towards the wind from the base of the structure. The mill was used to grind flour for rye bread and animal feed, as well as for preparing groats.
A Celebration of New Rye
Every summer, the Āraiši windmill celebrates “Jēkabi” – the Day of New Rye Bread, gathering bread bakers from across the region. Visitors can discover the masters’ baking tips and tricks, enjoy a taste of the fresh bread, and join in baking small loaves. Children, accompanied by their parents, play “The Little Loaf Trail” – completing fun challenges that share the secrets behind making traditional bread.
Hearty Meals for Tourists
Tourist groups of 10 or more can enjoy a generous miller’s lunch: barley porridge with crispy pork and a drink, followed by a sweet course of rye bread dessert.
Events and Festivities
Full catering service is available for festive occasions. There’s also a special newlywed programme, which includes joint activities like grinding grains for the first pancakes or loaves, identifying different grain products, and many other playful tasks.
New – Outdoor Celebration Terrace
A newly built celebration terrace allows you to enjoy festivities in the open air at the foot of the windmill. It can host up to 60 guests.
A Romantic Ceremony Spot
Each year, several couples getting married in the Cēsis region choose the Āraiši windmill as their wedding venue. The stunning view from the windmill hilltop and the nearby nesting stork family take your breath away! Decoration and floral services are also available.
