Ķūķu Cliffs
Standing at 43 metres, Ķūķu Cliffs are the highest exposed Devonian rock face in Latvia. The upper layers above the sandstone consist of clay rich in fossilised marine remains, offering a rare glimpse into ancient geology.
Due to river erosion and frequent landslides, the cliffs are constantly evolving — in some places, the riverbank has retreated by up to 10 metres in just a few years!
Below the cliffs lie a series of multi-level rapids, once known to timber rafters as the “Rapid Rocks”, a name reflecting the dramatic scenery and powerful water flow.
In the middle section of the cliffs, near water level, is a unique Ķūķu Cave, carved into the sandstone and accessible only during low water periods. In winter, spectacular icefalls form at the cave’s entrance, making it a magical natural sight.
Located in the Gauja River Valley, this site is a must-see for nature lovers, geologists, and photographers alike.
