Veselava Manor Nature Trails

The surroundings of Veselava Manor offer three circular loops of varying lengths, allowing you to choose the perfect intensity for your winter walk.

  • Manor Forest Trail (~2.5 km): Best for active hikers. This path leads through hilly woodland, crossing small bridges over the Dzirnupe River and offering views of impressive sandstone cliffs. The return journey follows a gentle dirt road.
  • Raunis River Trail (~1 km): Starting at the Veselava open-air stage, stairs lead you down to the riverbank. In winter, the flow of the Raunis River and the changing natural scenery are particularly striking.
  • Easy Step Trail (~0.75 km): A peaceful walk without stairs or steep inclines, ideal for a relaxed forest experience.

Riebiņi Lake Nature Trail

An excellent weekend route for those seeking tranquility and new discoveries in the wild.

  • Length: 6 km (Circular)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • What to expect: The first 3 km wind through a micro-reserve, home to 156–176-year-old oaks and pines. Look out for woodpecker holes and squirrel tracks in the snow! The path continues past “Vecriebiņi” farmstead through a magically beautiful spruce grove. Pro tip: Bring binoculars to spot the birds and wildlife inhabiting the lakeside in winter.

Strīķupe River Trail

A perfect route for adventure seekers looking to explore the mysterious banks of the Strīķupe River.

  • Length: 6 km (Circular)
  • Difficulty: Moderate (expect fallen trees and wet sections in some areas)
  • What to expect: The trail begins near Kalēju Cave, once known as the longest cave in Latvia. From there, it winds along the river to Nebraukšu Cave, with the return journey following a comfortable forest road. The trail is not marked in nature, so using a GPX file is highly recommended. Important: Bats hibernate in the caves during winter, so please view them only from the outside!

Kvēpene Nature Trail

A route that combines ancient legends with the most impressive natural sites of the Gauja National Park.

  • Length: ~11 km (Circular)
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • What to expect: Starting from the Raiskums Chapel, the trail leads to the Kvēpene Cave and a sacred spring. The highlight is the Kvēpene Giant Oak – one of Latvia’s most majestic trees, over 500 years old! Afterward, climb Rūsiņš Hill to enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the wintry Gauja Valley.

From Līgatne to Sigulda

A trail designed for those seeking a true adventure through the ancient valley of the Baltics’ most impressive river.

  • Length: 30 km (One-way) or a ~13 km loop to the Līgatne Nature Trails
  • Difficulty: Moderate/Hard (due to distance)
  • What to expect: On winter days with light snow, this route reveals the stunning landscapes of the Gauja banks, including the Gūdu Cliffs and Katrīna’s Rock. This is a natural forest path that is not cleared, requiring sturdy footwear and a navigation device. A great alternative is the 13 km circular route to the Līgatne Nature Trails and back.

Safety First!

While enjoying your winter hikes in the Cēsis region, please keep safety in mind:

  • Under no circumstances should you step on the ice of rivers or lakes! Ice can be deceptive and dangerous, especially near moving water.
  • Be prepared! Winter trails are not sanded or cleared of snow; choose stable, non-slip footwear. Plan your time to ensure you return before dark.
  • Respect nature! “Leave no trace” – what you bring in, please take out! Do not disturb the local wildlife and respect private property signs.
