Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum Rural Exhibition “Vēveri”
Vēveri is a unique cluster of traditional Latvian farmsteads, typical of Piebalga’s rural landscape, with origins dating back to the mid-16th century.
In the 19th century, weaving became the main source of income here, with 2–4 looms clattering in every household. During the “Time of the Surveyors” (1870s–1880s), local farmers began purchasing land from the manor. At that time, eight family farms made up Vēveri – a layout still visible in today’s landscape.
To preserve this historic cultural setting, complete with old buildings, roads, tree plantings, and land use structure, the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum established a rural branch in Vēveri. Today, six of the eight original homesteads are managed by the museum, while Lejasvēveri and Jaunvēveri remain privately owned.
