Augstais Hill
Right in the centre of Dzērbene, the striking “Augstais Kalns” (High Hill) rises with steep forested slopes nearly 20 metres high—covered in pines, spruces, and hazels. Lakes border the hill on two sides, a stream flows along the third, and the fourth edge was once encircled by water, forming a natural fortress.
At the summit lies a unique 50 × 50 metre plateau reinforced with ramparts and twin defensive ditches. Historically, the western side—facing the former parsonage—housed a forecourt, which now provides sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
Since the early 20th century, this hillfort has become a beloved gathering place for local residents. Its flat crest proved ideal for dancing, and so began an enduring tradition—from rustic “green dances” to evening socials and disco nights, Dzērbene’s hill remains a vibrant centre of community celebration.
