Dzērbene Cultural and Historical Heritage Centre
In the very heart of Dzērbene, a red brick building from 1898 stands proudly beside the historic Lutheran Church (1840–1843), once built by the last Livonian of Vidzeme, Mārčs Sārums, and near the now-lost Credit Union House, destroyed during the war. The address “Biedri” still echoes its former significance.
Since 2020, this site has been home to the Dzērbene Cultural Heritage Centre, run by a local NGO that organises cultural projects such as Mālder Days, celebrating art and history.
For heritage lovers (by prior booking), we offer:
- Fireweed tea with artist Ērika Māldere – and a conversation about the rare book “Stories of Grandpa from Dzērbene” by Jānis Slaidiņš (1905–1983). Learn about the unique rediscovery of the manuscript, the process of illustrating it, and tales from 19th–20th century manor life. (Duration: 1–2h)
- Historic walking tour (2h) – trace the steps and sketching sites of Dzērbene-born Baltic-German artist and writer Karl Gottard Grass (1767–1814), whose drawings were sent to Johann Christoph Brotze. Explore long-lost landmarks and historical layers of the village.
Price: €5 (1 hour)
This location proudly supports the “Hiker-Friendly” initiative and welcomes Green Rail Trail cyclists and skiers. Easily accessible by paved road, with picnic areas and a nearby shop. Combine your visit with a trip to the Dzērbene Castle, church, hillfort, or local swimming spot.
