Memorial Museum of the Brothers Kaudzītes “Kalna Kaibēni”
Kalna Kaibēni Memorial Museum is the oldest memorial museum in Latvia, welcoming visitors since 1929. This historic and inspiring site is where the renowned Latvian writers Reinis Kaudzīte and Matīss Kaudzīte wrote the first Latvian novel, Mērnieku laiki (The Times of the Surveyors), along with around fifty other literary works. Today, the museum stands not only as a remarkable monument to Latvian literary heritage but also as an important testament to 19th-century rural school history.
When visiting the museum, guests can experience the authentic atmosphere of the 19th century. Between 1868 and 1882, the building served as a parish school where the Kaudzīte brothers worked as teachers. During this period, they educated more than one thousand children, encouraging independent thinking and an appreciation of beauty and culture. The museum still preserves the original interior, as well as the brothers’ travel memorabilia and everyday objects, offering visitors a vivid insight into their daily life, teaching work, and social contributions.
After exploring the historic rooms, visitors are encouraged to take a peaceful walk through the museum garden. Here you will encounter characters from the novel Mērnieku laiki, the legendary memory corner, and a charming garden gazebo for relaxation. Since 2020, the garden once again features a viewing platform. The Kaudzīte brothers originally created it after travelling across Europe, inspired particularly by their visit to the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris. They believed that without a scenic viewpoint, a visit could never feel truly complete.
