This charming town, known for its historic paper mill and workers’ village, invites you to explore and discover! Whether you prefer tranquil nature trails, savouring meals prepared by local food lovers, or immersing yourself in history, Līgatne has something to offer. Take a look at our suggested 2-day itinerary – and we’ll see you in Līgatne!
Day 1

Begin your day with a visit to the Līgatne Paper Mill Historical Centre and the Paper Mill itself. Discover the rich history of paper production and the unique charm of the former factory village.
Līgatne is home to Latvia’s oldest paper mill workers’ village – a unique and cohesive industrial heritage site. Here, you can explore an authentic paper mill worker’s flat. With the help of a short film, you’ll be transported back in time to witness the daily life of the local working families.
Head to the town centre to discover the story-rich Bicycle Museum, where a fascinating journey through Latvia’s cycling history awaits you — told through various objects, videos, and photographs.

In both 2023 and 2024, Michelin’s Green Star for culinary excellence and sustainable practices was awarded to a single restaurant in Latvia – Pavāru Māja in Līgatne.
Head chef Juris Dukaļskis and his team create their menu based on seasonal produce from local farmers and the wild, placing strong emphasis on the slow food philosophy, which promotes sustainable practices and a respectful relationship with both the environment and people.
Next to the restaurant, Pavāru Māja’s owner, Ēriks Dreibants, has created the Nature Observers’ Garden – a public space open to all, inviting you to pause, listen, and explore the rhythms of nature. Enjoy birdsong, insect habitats, butterfly-attracting flowers and shrubs, and beds of herbs and vegetables.
In the afternoon, uncover the secrets of the Secret Soviet Bunker, a fascinating relic of Latvia’s recent past. Located 9 metres underground, this bunker was built as a nuclear fallout shelter for the Communist elite of Latvia. It still houses authentic exhibits from that era.
Fun fact: Visitors can have lunch 1980s-style – seated at tables covered with waxed tablecloths, drinking from traditional cut-glass tumblers. The menu includes nostalgic dishes like dumplings, stewed fruit drink (kompots), and rye bread.

For a relaxing evening, head to the Zeit Creative Quarter, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea in the cosy atmosphere of its lovely café. During the summer, Zeit often hosts live music events, and for those seeking adventure, the Net Park offers a unique experience 7 metres above the ground. End your day in comfort by staying at Zeit’s accommodation, the perfect place to recharge for another day of exploration.
Day 2
After a delicious and hearty breakfast at one of Līgatne’s welcoming cafés or restaurants, your adventures continue!
Start with a visit to the Līgatne Winery – a family-owned business established in 2010 with the goal of producing high-quality, flavourful wines made from Latvian-grown fruits and berries.
Guests can enjoy wine tasting by candlelight inside a sandstone cave carved into the Lustūzis Cliff. During the tasting, you’ll learn about the history of the Līgatne paper mill village, its caves and cliffs, the winemaking process, and the story behind the winery itself – all accompanied by a variety of wines and local cows’ cheese snacks.

Next, experience a truly unique form of transport: the Līgatne Cable Ferry across the River Gauja – the only ferry of its kind in the Baltics. Powered entirely by the river’s current, it offers a slow, primitive, and peaceful crossing to the opposite bank of the Gauja.
The ferry experience is unforgettable – stepping aboard, you’ll feel the ferryman guide the platform into the current, allowing the flow of the river to carry you across in a tranquil, timeless fashion.
Stop for lunch at Restaurant 1815, located in Līgatne’s oldest building – the original paper mill, directly across from a pond home to the local swan. The interiors have been carefully restored to preserve the historic charm, while offering a modern, cosy, and stylish atmosphere.

Take a refreshing walk at Vienkoči Park, where themed walking trails are lined with educational and interactive features. The onsite Woodcraft Museum, designed as an old-style workshop, showcases Līgatne’s history, local nature, and the craftsmanship of wooden products – from the Stone Age right up to the present day.
Līgatne offers a wide variety of accommodation options to suit every taste. Whether you’re looking for a modern guest house, a cosy campsite, or luxurious apartments, there’s something here for everyone. No matter your preference, these places offer the perfect base to discover Līgatne’s natural beauty and attractions – ensuring a restful and unforgettable stay.
