What anglers need to know
To fish legally, you must purchase a Fishing Card. It is required for everyone aged between 16 and 65.
If you are under 16, over 65, or have a disability, you may fish without a Fishing Card, but you must carry an identity document or disability certificate with you.
In some rivers and lakes, licensed fishing has been introduced. A licence must be purchased in accordance with the licensed fishing regulations of the specific lake.
Fishing Cards and licences are available in person at specialist angling shops and at Latvijas Pasts, but the most convenient way to purchase them is online at manacope.lv. There, you can find out what rules apply in a particular location, whether a licence is required, and you can also conveniently register your catch.
From 1 January to 30 April, licensed fishing for salmonids is in force in the Gauja and Brasla rivers.

Why it is necessary to purchase a Fishing Card and a licence
This helps preserve fish stocks, protect species diversity, prevent overfishing and improve the fishing environment. The money from purchased Fishing Cards and licences is invested in releasing fish fry into water bodies, maintaining lakes and improving recreation areas. So, when you purchase a card and a licence, you too help care for a well-kept environment and the nature around us!

Nature’s generosity should be appreciated and protected, so pay attention to the restrictions that apply in the particular river or lake. Make sure you know which fish you may keep in your catch, what size they must be, and whether any prohibitions are in force due to the spawning season.
