Latvian Field Plant Breeding Museum
The Latvian Field Crop Breeding Museum was opened on 23 April 2013, marking the 100th anniversary of the State Priekuļi Institute of Field Crop Breeding. The museum is housed in the historic 1923 Breeding Building, originally designed for plant breeding work and now recognised as a national industrial heritage site protected under Latvia’s cultural monuments list.
Still an active working facility, the building continues to serve professional plant breeders. Specialised equipment and storage cabinets are used to evaluate, dry, and preserve seeds and plants, giving visitors a real-time look into the world of agricultural science.
Explore the History and Future of Crop Breeding in Latvia
The museum showcases the development of field crop breeding in Latvia, highlighting key regions and crop varieties where selection work has taken place—or is still ongoing.
Visitors, especially children and school groups, can explore the diversity of crops such as grains, peas, and potatoes, while more experienced guests will discover locally developed varieties still cultivated in Latvian farms today.
Unique Agricultural Tools & Equipment
The exhibition features rare and often one-of-a-kind tools and machines designed specifically for breeding purposes, alongside historical farming tools and laboratory devices used for harvest evaluation and documentation.
With its original walls still echoing the sounds of daily work, the museum offers a first-hand look at the process of creating new crop varieties, making agricultural science both accessible and engaging.
Seasonal Visits & Tours
During the summer blooming season and autumn harvest, visitors can witness the work of plant breeders in action. Advance booking is required; weekday visits only.
