Brasla River
The Brasla River flows for 68 km, with a total drop of 65 metres, beginning near Pociems, between Lake Katvari and Lake Rāķi, not far from Limbaži. In its upper course, Brasla is a gentle lowland river, winding through flat, marshy meadows. Only near Straupe does the river valley deepen, revealing its first rust-coloured sandstone outcrops.
Further downstream, the gradient increases, exposing ever more scenic rock formations. Brasla is considered one of Latvia’s classic canoeing rivers, rich in natural beauty and peaceful landscapes.
While it has a large drainage basin, water levels drop in dry summers, so the river is best suited for paddling in spring, autumn, or after extended rainfall.
Paddling Highlights:
- Standard route: Straupe or Plācis to Sigulda
- In high water: paddle from Umurga or earlier
- From Plācis: a calmer stretch, free of major rapids, logjams or beaver dams
- Near Straupe: lush hardwood forests open into the historic Hanseatic townscape
- Look for sandstone outcrops and old mill buildings, especially around Vējiņi and the underground lakes area
⚠️ Safety note: The Brasla HPP–Gauja section can be dangerous during high water. Beginners should assess their skill level and consult with the boat rental operator about river conditions, capsizing procedures, and the best boat type.
For this stretch, inflatable boats are recommended for less experienced paddlers.
