Red Cliffs Trail
Trail length: 2 km (loop trail)
Location: Right bank of the Gauja River, ~0.5 km upstream from the old Raiskums (Lieplejas) inn.
The Red Cliffs, also known as Raiskums Rock, stretch for several hundred metres in vibrant red hues. These sandstone formations, split by natural fissures, create dramatic patterns and niches, forming small caves and artistic geological sculptures.
At the midpoint, the rocky belt breaks, dividing the cliff into two striking parts. Several springs emerge directly from the rock – the most famous being Rūcamavots, known for its rumbling sound and pure water, often collected by locals.
Located within Gauja National Park, the Red Cliffs are a protected geological monument. A well-maintained loop trail leads visitors along the base of the cliffs and past the spring. At the start of the trail, there is a small car park for easy access.
Along the route, visitors can enjoy a unique outdoor exhibition of large-scale paintings, inspired by the fairy tales of Latvian writer Kārlis Skalbe.
