St. Thomas Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jaunpiebalga

St. Thomas Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jaunpiebalga is a State-protected cultural monument and one of the largest and most beautiful rural Lutheran churches in Latvia. Built between 1801–1804 and expanded in 1871–1873 during the service of Pastor Kārlis Ludvigs Kēlbrants, the church was restored from 2009–2013 under the initiative and leadership of Tālavs Jundzis, son of Pastor Edgars Jundzis.

The congregation takes pride in its 1914 pipe organ by the German organ builder Georg Friedrich Steinmeyer, its oak-carved pulpit and altar, and its impressive chandeliers. The church has preserved its historic form almost unchanged, and several of its pastors have made significant contributions to Latvian cultural history:

  • Kristofs Reinholds Girgensons (1791–1814) – translator and Enlightenment advocate.
  • Kārlis Eduards Napjerskis (1814–1829) – bibliographer of Latvian literature.
  • Dr. theol. Prof. Edgars Jundzis (1955–1986) – researcher of the life of Jesus, ancient Latvian texts, and Ancient Greek.

Next to the church stands a monument by sculptor Kārlis Zāle, dedicated to parish members who fell in World War I and the Latvian War of Independence (1914–1920). It was unveiled in 1930 in the presence of Latvia’s President Alberts Kviesis, Saeima Speaker Pauls Kalniņš, War Minister Mārtiņš Vācietis, and General Jānis Balodis. During the Soviet era, the monument was protected from demolition by a deliberately planted thicket.

Worship services take place on Sundays at 12:00, but not every week. Please contact the parish in advance for service dates and guided tours.
