The most significant natural treasure of the Cēsis area is its diverse mosaic of habitats—some shaped entirely by nature, others through traditional land use. This includes the Gauja River and its floodplains, steep valley slopes, ravines carved by small rivers and streams, densely forested areas, and both cultivated and wildflower-rich grasslands.
Among the most valuable habitats are protected slope and ravine forests, sandstone outcrops, dry steppe meadows, calcareous fens, and oxbow lakes.

On October 25, 2023, during an international BioRegion forum held in Sigulda, Cēsis Municipality officially pledged to protect Gauja National Park by signing a Memorandum of Goodwill to establish the park as Latvia’s first BioRegion. This marks a joint commitment to creating an environmentally and climate-friendly space that is inclusive, resource-efficient, and supportive of long-term economic well-being for all.
