Hospital

Up until 1997, this building housed a hospital. The hospital was constructed by Wilhelm Mentzendorff and his brothers with their own funds, in memory of their deceased father Alexander, and handed over to the Līgatne Paper Mill to be used free of charge. In the early 20th century, the hospital was equipped with the most modern instruments and equipment of that time. The medical team consisted of a physician, a feldsher, and an attendant. Until World War II, the workers of the Līgatne Paper Mill would receive medical services free of charge, as they were covered by the Health Insurance Fund of the paper mill. From 1997 to 2015, this building housed a nursing home.

The designer of this building, Jānis Frīdrihs Baumanis, is an important figure in Latvian architecture. He was one of the founders of the Riga Architects’ Association and Riga Latvian Society and played an active role in the organisation and participation in the First Latvian Song Festival. Baumanis designed around 20 Orthodox churches in Southern Estonia and Vidzeme, as well as more than 150 residential and public buildings in Riga. His notable works in Riga include buildings such as the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia (formerly the Vidzeme Knighthood House), the Regional Court building (now the Supreme Court building on the boulevard Brīvības bulvāris), Alexander Grammar School at Krišjāņa Barona iela 1 (now the Latvian Academy of Music), the Latvian Bank building in Riga, at Pils iela 12, the Riga Circus at Merķeļa iela 4, and the University of Latvia building on the boulevard Raiņa bulvāris.
